The A.S. Roma 1987-90 Home Retro Football Shirt recreates one of the most elegant and enduring Giallorossi designs of the late 1980s, worn across three consecutive seasons: 1987/88, 1988/89 and 1989/90. Historical Era: The emergence of Giuseppe Giannini as Roma’s midfield leaderThe 1987/88 season was the strongest league campaign of the three. Roma finished third in Serie A, with the squad combining established members of the club’s successful early-1980s generation with a newer group developing around Giuseppe Giannini. Rudi Völler had also arrived in Rome and began what would become a highly successful five-season spell with the club.
Roma’s attack during 1987/88 included Völler, Roberto Pruzzo and Zbigniew Boniek, while Giannini increasingly became the creative centre of the team. Bruno Conti remained another important link with Roma’s 1983 Scudetto-winning generation. Period match records show Giannini and Völler regularly among Roma’s scorers during the campaign.
The 1988/89 season brought significant changes to the squad. Pruzzo and Boniek had departed, while players including Ruggiero Rizzitelli and Daniele Massaro joined the attacking group. Völler became increasingly influential, finishing the Serie A season with 10 league goals, while Giannini scored six. Roma ultimately finished eighth in Serie A.
Roma also competed in the UEFA Cup that season. One of the most memorable European matches came against Partizan Belgrade. After losing the first leg 4–2, Roma won the return match 2–0 at the Stadio Olimpico, with Völler opening the scoring and Giannini converting the decisive penalty. Roma subsequently reached the Round of 16 before being eliminated by Dynamo Dresden.
The 1989/90 campaign brought another managerial change, with Luigi Radice taking charge. Because the Stadio Olimpico was being renovated ahead of the 1990 FIFA World Cup, Roma played their home fixtures at the Stadio Flaminio. The team remained competitive around the upper section of the Serie A table and enjoyed a particularly satisfying derby record against Lazio.
Völler was especially influential during the latter part of that season, scoring in Roma's 1–0 derby victory over Lazio and twice in a 5–2 victory over Verona. Giannini remained the team's principal creative midfielder and one of the players most strongly identified with the club.
