Felix Magath’s team entered the season as defending German champions and successfully retained the Bundesliga title, finishing first with 75 points, five ahead of Werder Bremen.
Bayern’s attack was led by Roy Makaay, who scored 17 Bundesliga goals. Michael Ballack contributed an impressive 14 league goals from midfield, while Claudio Pizarro added another 11. Schweinsteiger, Lahm, Zé Roberto, Demichelis, Lúcio and Sagnol were also important members of a deep squad.
The season became even more successful in the DFB-Pokal. Bayern progressed through the competition to face Eintracht Frankfurt in the final in Berlin on 29 April 2006. Claudio Pizarro scored the only goal in a 1–0 victory, securing the cup and completing Bayern’s second consecutive domestic league-and-cup double.
In Europe, Bayern competed in the UEFA Champions League and reached the Round of 16. Their campaign ended against AC Milan after a 1–1 first-leg draw in Munich and defeat in the return fixture in Italy. The European campaign did not match the team's domestic success, but Bayern remained firmly established among Europe’s leading clubs.
The season also marked the end of an important chapter for Michael Ballack. Having developed into the dominant attacking midfielder of the Bayern side, 2005/06 was his fourth and final season with the club. His 14 Bundesliga goals made him Bayern’s second-highest league scorer behind Makaay, an exceptional return from midfield.
At the same time, the season featured two players who would become fundamental to Bayern’s next generation. Bastian Schweinsteiger, wearing No.31, made 30 Bundesliga appearances, while Philipp Lahm, No.21, returned to Bayern and made 20 league appearances.
