The Coventry City 1996-97 Home Retro Football Shirt recreates one of the Sky Blues’ most distinctive Premier League designs, worn during a dramatic season in which Coventry secured top-flight survival on the final day.
The shirt moves away from a plain sky-blue look with a bold combination of sky-blue and dark navy vertical stripes across the body. A dark collar and matching sleeve trim are complemented by a distinctive chequered pattern, giving the shirt a particularly recognisable mid-1990s appearance. Period kit records confirm the sky-blue/navy striped design for Coventry’s 1996/97 Home shirt.
The shirt is closely associated with Dion Dublin, Coventry’s leading scorer, alongside Gary McAllister, Noel Whelan, Darren Huckerby, John Salako and long-serving goalkeeper Steve Ogrizovic.
Most importantly, it represents one of Coventry City’s classic Premier League survival stories: the club entered the final day in serious danger before winning 2–1 away at Tottenham Hotspur to preserve its place in the Premier League.

Historical Significance: Dramatic final-day Premier League survivalThe 1996/97 season was dominated by Coventry City’s battle to remain in the Premier League. The campaign began poorly, with the Sky Blues losing four of their opening five league matches, including a 4–0 defeat at Middlesbrough. Their first league victory finally arrived against Leeds United, when goals from John Salako and Noel Whelan secured a 2–1 win at Highfield Road.
A major change followed during the season as Gordon Strachan replaced Ron Atkinson as manager. Coventry continued to struggle for consistency, however, and the relegation fight remained unresolved until the final weeks of the campaign.
Dion Dublin Leads the Attack
Once again, Dion Dublin was Coventry’s principal source of goals.
He scored 13 Premier League goals from 34 appearances, making him Coventry’s leading scorer for the season. FBref records all 13 as non-penalty goals, highlighting his importance as the focal point of the attack.
Alongside Dublin, Coventry had a mixture of experience and emerging attacking talent. Noel Whelan remained an important forward option, while the arrival of the extremely quick Darren Huckerby added another dimension to the attack.
Midfield was strengthened by Gary McAllister, whose technical ability and experience made him an important figure during the campaign. McAllister scored Coventry’s first league goal of the season in the 1–1 draw at West Ham and later converted a penalty against Derby County in the penultimate home fixture.
FA Cup Run
Coventry also reached the Fifth Round of the FA Cup.
Their Third Round tie against non-league Woking required a replay after a 1–1 draw at Highfield Road. Coventry won the replay 2–1 before travelling to Blackburn Rovers in the Fourth Round.
Against Blackburn, goals from Eoin Jess and Darren Huckerby produced a 2–1 away victory. Coventry's run ended in the Fifth Round with a 3–2 defeat at Derby County, despite goals from Huckerby and Whelan.
Final-Day Survival at Tottenham
The defining moment of the season arrived on 11 May 1997.
Coventry travelled to Tottenham Hotspur for their final Premier League fixture knowing that their top-flight status remained in danger. The Sky Blues produced the result they needed, winning 2–1 at White Hart Lane.
Appropriately, Dion Dublin was among the scorers, with Paul Williams scoring Coventry’s other goal.
That victory proved enough for Coventry to finish 17th with 41 points, preserving their Premier League status. The final table placed them just above the relegation positions after a campaign in which they had spent much of the year fighting at the bottom end of the division.
The 1996/97 Home shirt therefore represents much more than its distinctive striped design. It belongs to the era of Highfield Road, Dion Dublin and Coventry’s famous ability to survive in the English top flight, with the final-day victory at Tottenham providing the season’s defining memory.
Rec. Player Printing Options

DUBLIN 9 is the defining printing for the Coventry City 1996-97 Home Retro Football Shirt.
Dion Dublin had already established himself as Coventry’s main centre-forward and again led the team’s scoring in 1996/97, recording 13 goals in 34 Premier League appearances.
His connection to this exact season became even stronger on the final day. With Coventry fighting for their Premier League survival, Dublin scored in the 2–1 away victory over Tottenham Hotspur that helped keep the Sky Blues in the top flight.
For alternatives, McALLISTER 10 captures the experienced midfield core of the team, while HUCKERBY 7 is particularly representative of the younger, quicker attacking side that was developing under Gordon Strachan.
