In Serie A, the Nerazzurri endured a difficult campaign and became involved in the relegation battle, eventually finishing 13th and securing survival only near the end of the season. Inter themselves describe the campaign as one in which the club fought to avoid relegation while simultaneously producing an exhilarating European run.
The squad had been strengthened by two major Dutch arrivals, Dennis Bergkamp and Wim Jonk. Bergkamp found Serie A considerably more difficult than European competition, scoring eight league goals in 31 appearances, but his performances in the UEFA Cup were exceptional. Inter’s historical records credit him with eight goals in 11 UEFA Cup appearances during the campaign.
UEFA confirms Bergkamp finished as the 1993/94 UEFA Cup’s leading scorer with eight goals, one ahead of Karlsruhe’s Edgar Schmitt. Inter scored 22 goals during the competition, more than any other club.
Rubén Sosa remained Inter’s principal domestic goalscorer. The Uruguayan scored 16 Serie A goals in 28 appearances, demonstrating his importance during a season in which the club desperately needed league goals.
Inter’s UEFA Cup run included a memorable quarter-final against Borussia Dortmund. The Nerazzurri won 3–1 in Dortmund, with Wim Jonk scoring twice and Igor Shalimov adding the third. Despite losing the return leg 2–1 at San Siro, Inter progressed to face Cagliari in the semi-finals.
After losing the first semi-final leg 3–2, Inter produced a commanding 3–0 victory at San Siro. Bergkamp opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Nicola Berti and Wim Jonk completed the comeback.
The two-legged UEFA Cup Final against Austria Salzburg completed the extraordinary European campaign. In Vienna, Nicola Berti scored the only goal as Inter won the first leg 1–0.
The return at San Siro on 11 May 1994 also finished 1–0. This time Wim Jonk scored in the 62nd minute, securing a 2–0 aggregate victory and the second UEFA Cup title in Inter history. It was also the final Inter appearance for two long-serving club figures, Walter Zenga and Riccardo Ferri.
