UEFA Champions League: Quarter-finalsThe 2004/05 season marked the arrival of Fabio Capello, who replaced Marcello Lippi following Juventus’ third-place finish the previous campaign. Capello immediately reshaped the squad, with major additions including Zlatan Ibrahimović, Fabio Cannavaro, Emerson and Jonathan Zebina.
Juventus produced an extremely strong domestic campaign and finished first in Serie A, four points ahead of AC Milan. At the time, UEFA reported the result as Juventus’ 28th Scudetto. The title was subsequently revoked as part of the 2006 Calciopoli rulings, so historically the most accurate presentation is that Juventus finished first in the 2004/05 Serie A table but are not officially recognised as champions for that season.
The European campaign was also notable. Juventus advanced from the UEFA Champions League group stage before facing Real Madrid in the Round of 16. After losing the first leg 1–0 in Madrid, Juventus overturned the tie in Turin: David Trezeguet levelled the aggregate score before Marcelo Zalayeta struck in extra time to complete a memorable 2–0 second-leg victory and 2–1 aggregate win.
Their Champions League run ended against eventual winners Liverpool in the quarter-finals. Juventus lost 2–1 at Anfield before being held to a 0–0 draw in Turin, resulting in a 2–1 aggregate elimination. UEFA records Juventus’ overall 2004/05 European campaign as seven wins, three draws and two defeats from 12 matches.
The squad itself explains why this shirt remains so memorable. Del Piero remained the symbolic captain, Nedvěd was still one of Europe’s elite midfielders, Ibrahimović emerged immediately as an important attacking figure, while Trezeguet provided elite finishing. Behind them, Cannavaro, Thuram and Zambrotta formed part of an outstanding defensive unit in front of Gianluigi Buffon.
