Background:

The year 1981 marked a historic moment in football as Liverpool of England faced off against Real Madrid of Spain in the European Cup final. This epic clash took place on 27 May 1981 at the Parc des Princes in Paris, France. The final was the culmination of the 1980–81 season of Europe's premier cup competition, the European Cup. Liverpool, appearing in their third final, had previously reached the final in 1977 and 1978. Real Madrid, on the other hand, were no strangers to the grand stage, making their ninth final appearance. They had previously won the competition six times and lost twice.

The Journey to the Final:

Both Liverpool and Real Madrid had to navigate through four rounds of intense competition to reach the final. Matches were contested over two legs, with each team playing a match at their home ground. Liverpool's journey was marked by comfortable victories, with all but one of their ties resulting in wins by significant margins. They even advanced past Bayern Munich on the away goals rule. Real Madrid's path included both close encounters and comfortable victories. While they defeated Limerick 7–2 on aggregate in the first round, their final two ties were won by at least two goals.

The Final Match:

In front of a crowd of 48,360 enthusiastic fans, the first half of the match remained goalless. Liverpool broke the deadlock in the second half when Alan Kennedy scored. They held onto this lead to secure a 1–0 victory, marking Liverpool's third European Cup triumph and continuing the dominance of English teams in the competition with a fifth consecutive win by an English club. Bob Paisley, Liverpool's manager, achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first manager to win the European Cup three times.
