SUN JIHAI #17 — 2007/08 FINAL SEASON AT MANCHESTER CITY
Sun Jihai wore the No.17 shirt for Manchester City during the 2007/08 season, the final campaign of his six-year spell with the club. The versatile Chinese defender had joined City in 2002 and became a popular figure among supporters, capable of operating at right-back as well as in several other defensive roles. By 2007/08, he was one of the longest-serving members of a City squad undergoing significant change under manager Sven-Göran Eriksson.
Although no longer an automatic starter, Sun remained part of the first-team squad and made 14 Premier League appearances during the campaign, seven of them starts, as well as two League Cup appearances. He featured in matches during the latter stages of the season, including the final Premier League fixture against Middlesbrough.
The season brought Sun’s Manchester City career to a close. After six years in Manchester, he left at the end of the 2007/08 campaign and joined Sheffield United. His City years had already secured an important place in English football history: Sun became the first East Asian player to score in the Premier League and developed into a fan favourite during his time at the club.
