Historical Significance: Diego Maradona’s Final Season at NapoliNapoli entered 1990/91 as defending Serie A champions, having won their second Scudetto the previous season. Alberto Bigon remained in charge, and the squad still contained the core of the championship-winning team: Maradona, Careca, Alemão, Ferrara, De Napoli, Andrea Carnevale and goalkeeper Giovanni Galli.
The season began with a major trophy. On 1 September 1990, Napoli faced Coppa Italia holders Juventus in the Supercoppa Italiana at the Stadio San Paolo and produced an extraordinary 5–1 victory. Andrea Silenzi and Careca both scored twice, while Massimo Crippa added the fifth. Roberto Baggio scored Juventus’ only goal. It remains one of Napoli’s most emphatic victories over Juventus and secured the club’s first Supercoppa Italiana.
As reigning Italian champions, Napoli also entered the 1990/91 European Cup. They comfortably eliminated Újpesti Dózsa in the first round before meeting Spartak Moscow. Both legs finished 0–0, and after extra time in Moscow the tie went to penalties, where Napoli were eliminated 5–3 in the shootout.
Domestically, Napoli could not reproduce their championship form and finished eighth in Serie A. The campaign nevertheless featured a squad packed with players strongly associated with the club’s late-1980s peak, while the emergence of a young Gianfranco Zola offered an early glimpse of the generation that would follow.
Above everything else, however, 1990/91 is remembered as Maradona’s final Napoli season. His last competitive appearance for the club came against Sampdoria in March 1991. A positive drug test subsequently resulted in a 15-month suspension, and he never played for Napoli again. He left having helped deliver two Serie A titles, the UEFA Cup, Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana, permanently changing the history and international profile of the club.
