Managed by Rinus Michels, the Dutch recovered from an opening 1–0 defeat against the Soviet Union by defeating England 3–1 and the Republic of Ireland 1–0, finishing second in their group and advancing to the semi-finals.
The semi-final against host nation West Germany became one of the defining matches in Dutch football history. After falling behind to a Lothar Matthäus penalty, Ronald Koeman equalised from the penalty spot before Marco van Basten scored the late winner, sending the Netherlands into the European Championship final with a 2–1 victory.
In the final in Munich, the Netherlands faced the Soviet Union again. Captain Ruud Gullit opened the scoring with a powerful first-half header before Van Basten produced the tournament’s most famous moment—his extraordinary second-half volley from a seemingly impossible angle. The Netherlands won 2–0, securing their first major international trophy.
Van Basten finished the tournament as the leading scorer with five goals, including his hat-trick against England, the semi-final winner against West Germany and the famous goal in the final. Gullit captained the side, while Rijkaard, Koeman, Arnold Mühren, Jan Wouters and goalkeeper Hans van Breukelen were also central figures in Michels’ championship-winning team.
