The Atlético Madrid 2004-05 Away Retro Football Shirt recreates one of the club’s most memorable alternative designs from the early Fernando Torres era, worn during his first full season as Atlético captain.
The shirt features a distinctive dark navy base with contrasting sky-blue panels and detailing, creating a sharp alternative to Atlético’s traditional red-and-white striped Home colours. The asymmetric colour treatment and athletic early-2000s silhouette make it immediately recognisable as part of the club’s 2004/05 collection. Period kit records confirm the Away shirt’s primary colours as navy and sky blue.
The design is particularly associated with Fernando Torres, who wore No.9 and started every league match during the campaign. The squad also featured Ariel Ibagaza, Diego Simeone, Luis Amaranto Perea, Pablo Ibáñez and Antonio López.
Another distinctive feature of Atlético shirts from this period was the unusual rotation of different film-themed front graphics during the club’s cinema promotional partnership. As a result, several visual variations of the 2004/05 Away shirt appeared during the season while retaining the same core navy-and-sky-blue identity.

Historical Significance: Fernando Torres’ first full season as Atlético captainThe 2004/05 campaign belongs firmly to the early Fernando Torres chapter of Atlético Madrid history. Still only 20 when the season began, Torres had already developed from academy prospect into the central figure of the first team and wore the captain’s armband despite his young age.
Under César Ferrando, Atlético competed in La Liga after beginning their competitive season in the UEFA Intertoto Cup. BDFutbol records Ferrando as coach throughout all 38 league rounds.
Atlético ultimately finished 11th in La Liga. The final position was disappointing for a squad hoping to challenge for European qualification, but Torres produced another excellent individual campaign.
The young striker appeared in all 38 league matches, starting 36 of them, and scored 16 La Liga goals. He was comfortably Atlético’s leading league scorer, ahead of Salva Ballesta with seven.
Torres’ importance was remarkable for his age. Rather than simply being an emerging forward, he was already the player around whom Atlético's attack and public identity were increasingly built. His No.9 shirt consequently became one of the defining Atlético player-number combinations of the 2000s.
Behind him, Argentine playmaker Ariel Ibagaza remained an important creative presence. He made 30 league appearances and scored twice, while midfielder Peter Luccin featured 29 times.
The defence contained several players who would remain important beyond this season. Pablo Ibáñez played all 35 of his league appearances as a starter and scored three goals, while Colombian centre-back Luis Amaranto Perea appeared 33 times. Antonio López made 32 appearances and also contributed three league goals.
Another notable name was Diego Simeone, then approaching the conclusion of his playing career. His presence gives the shirt additional retrospective significance considering his later history with Atlético as a coach.
Atlético also enjoyed a substantial Copa del Rey run, playing eight matches in the competition, while their European season began with six UEFA Intertoto Cup fixtures.
The 2004/05 Away shirt therefore captures Atlético during an important transitional period: before the club’s later European resurgence, but with Fernando Torres already established as captain, No.9 and the leading goalscorer of his boyhood club.
Rec. Player Printing Options
Printing Recommendation F. TORRES 9 The definitive choice. Fernando Torres was Atlético captain, played all 38 La Liga matches and led the team with 16 league goals. This is the player-number combination most strongly associated with the shirt. IBAGAZA 18 A strong creative option. Ariel Ibagaza was one of Atlético’s principal attacking midfielders, making 30 league appearances during the campaign. PEREA 21 An excellent defensive choice. Luis Amaranto Perea made 33 league appearances in his first Atlético season and became an important figure in the club’s defence. PABLO 22 Another strong defensive option. Pablo Ibáñez started all 35 of his league appearances and scored three times during an impressive first season with Atlético. ANTONIO LÓPEZ 3 A classic home-grown choice. Antonio López was an Atlético academy product and made 32 league appearances during 2004/05. LUCCIN 23 A distinctive midfield option. Peter Luccin was a regular in central midfield and appeared 29 times in La Liga during the season. SALVA 19 An alternative striker choice. Salva Ballesta scored seven league goals and provided another experienced attacking presence alongside Torres. SIMEONE 14 A highly collectible heritage option. Diego Simeone was in the closing stage of his playing career, giving this printing additional significance because of his later connection with Atlético. F. TORRES 9 is overwhelmingly the strongest printing for the Atlético Madrid 2004-05 Away Retro Football Shirt.
Torres played in all 38 La Liga matches, started 36 and scored 16 goals, making him Atlético’s leading scorer by a substantial margin. His No.9 assignment is also firmly documented throughout this period; squad-number records show Torres holding the number continuously from his early Atlético breakthrough through the end of his first spell in 2006/07.
More importantly, 2004/05 captures Torres at a particularly interesting point in his career: he was still only around 20–21 years old, yet was already Atlético’s captain, first-choice centre-forward and most important goalscorer.
For a less obvious alternative, SIMEONE 14 has excellent retrospective appeal because of his extraordinary long-term association with Atlético, while IBAGAZA 18 is a strong choice for one of the side’s principal creative players.
