The Liverpool 1979–82 Home Retro Football Shirt represents three trophy-filled seasons under legendary manager Bob Paisley. Liverpool won the First Division in 1979–80, lifted both the European Cup and League Cup in 1980–81, and returned to the top of English football with another league championship and League Cup triumph in 1981–82. Across the three seasons, the shirt was worn by an exceptional generation including Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness, Terry McDermott, Phil Thompson, Alan Hansen and the emerging Ian Rush.

The period produced some of Liverpool’s defining moments of the early 1980s. Alan Kennedy scored the winning goal against Real Madrid in the 1981 European Cup Final in Paris, while the following campaign saw Ian Rush establish himself as a prolific first-team goalscorer. The shirt is also historically significant for introducing Hitachi as Liverpool’s first front-of-shirt sponsor, making the 1979–82 period an important landmark in both the club’s history and the development of English football shirts.

The shirt is instantly recognisable for its clean all-red body, contrasting white V-neck collar and matching white sleeve trim, with the classic Liver Bird crest positioned on the chest and the bold HITACHI lettering providing the defining visual feature of the era. Compared with the more elaborate pinstriped Liverpool design introduced in 1982, this shirt retains the exceptionally simple all-red aesthetic associated with the great Paisley sides of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

  • Season Information

    Seasons: 1979–80 / 1980–81 / 1981–82
    Club: Liverpool FC
    Manager: Bob Paisley
    Home Shirt Period: 1979–82
Major Honours Across the Shirt’s Three-Season Run: 2 First Division titles, 1 European Cup, 2 League Cups, 2 Charity Shields

The 1979–82 Liverpool home shirt spans three highly successful seasons under Bob Paisley and is particularly significant as the first Liverpool home design to carry the club’s new Hitachi shirt sponsorship. The underlying red V-neck design had existed before 1979, but the sponsored 1979–82 version became closely associated with one of the club’s most successful periods.

    1979–80

    • Football League First Division: Champions
    • FA Cup: Semi-finals
    • League Cup: Semi-finals
    • European Cup: First Round
    • FA Charity Shield: Winners

Liverpool successfully defended the league championship, securing their 12th English league title. David Johnson led the scoring with 21 league goals, while Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness, Terry McDermott, Alan Hansen, Phil Thompson and Phil Neal were among the central figures of Paisley’s side.

    1980–81

    • Football League First Division: 5th
    • FA Cup: Fourth Round
    • League Cup: Winners
    • European Cup: Winners
    • FA Charity Shield: Winners

Although Liverpool finished only fifth in the league, 1980–81 became the most important cup season associated with this shirt. They captured their first League Cup, defeating West Ham United after a replay, and won their third European Cup, beating Real Madrid 1–0 in the Paris final through Alan Kennedy’s late goal. Terry McDermott finished as Liverpool’s leading scorer across all competitions with 22 goals.

    1981–82

    • Football League First Division: Champions
    • FA Cup: Fifth Round
    • League Cup: Winners
    • European Cup: Quarter-finals
    • Intercontinental Cup: Runners-up

Liverpool returned to the top of English football, winning their 13th league championship, and retained the League Cup. This was also the breakthrough campaign of Ian Rush, who finished as Liverpool’s leading scorer with 30 goals in all competitions. The 1981–82 season was the final campaign for the Hitachi-era home shirt before Liverpool introduced a new pinstriped design for 1982–83.

  • Rec. Player Printing Options

Liverpool were still using traditional match-day 1–11 numbering during this period rather than permanent squad numbers. Player names were not worn on the back, so the historically appropriate option is number only. Numbers represent the players most strongly associated with those positions during this period rather than permanent modern squad numbers.

Best Printing Choice: 7 (Kenny Dalglish)

    Other Strong Options: 8 (Graeme Souness) / 10 (Terry McDermott) / 4 (Phil Thompson) / 6 (Alan Hansen) / 9 (Ian Rush)

    Printing Recommendation
7 (Kenny Dalglish) We recommend No.7 as the definitive choice for this shirt. Dalglish was one of Liverpool’s most important attacking players throughout the entire 1979–82 period and the No.7 shirt is inseparable from his Liverpool legacy.
8 (Graeme Souness) An outstanding choice from one of the dominant midfielders of the era. Souness was central to Liverpool’s domestic and European success and captained the club during the latter part of this shirt’s lifespan.
10 (Terry McDermott) A particularly strong choice for the early years of the shirt. McDermott was one of Liverpool’s most influential midfielders and finished 1980–81 as the club’s leading scorer across all competitions.
4 (Phil Thompson) An excellent heritage option. The Liverpool-born centre-back captained the side to the 1981 European Cup and was one of the defining defensive figures of Paisley’s team.
6 (Alan Hansen) A classic defensive choice associated with one of Liverpool’s greatest-ever centre-backs. Hansen was already an increasingly important member of the side during this successful three-season period.
9 (Ian Rush) The strongest choice specifically for 1981–82. Rush broke through spectacularly during the final season of this shirt, scoring 30 goals in all competitions as Liverpool won the league and League Cup.

We recommend No.7 for Kenny Dalglish as the leading printing option for the Liverpool 1979–82 home shirt. Dalglish was a central figure throughout all three seasons represented by this design, combining elite performances with a lasting association with Liverpool’s iconic No.7. During this period he helped the club win two league championships, the European Cup and two League Cups, making No.7 the strongest combination of historical relevance, player recognition and collector appeal.

No.8 for Graeme Souness is another outstanding option. Souness was at the heart of Liverpool’s midfield during this era and played a major role in the club’s domestic and European success. For customers who want a player equally representative of Bob Paisley’s powerful late-1970s and early-1980s Liverpool sides, No.8 is an especially strong alternative.

For a shirt intended specifically to represent 1981–82, No.9 for Ian Rush becomes particularly attractive. That season marked his major breakthrough, with 30 goals in all competitions as Liverpool completed a First Division and League Cup double.
