The 1995–96 season was an important campaign for Liverpool under manager Roy Evans, with the club continuing to develop an attacking side built around a blend of established figures and emerging stars.

Liverpool finished 3rd in the Premier League with 71 points, recording 20 wins, 11 draws and seven defeats. The team scored 70 league goals, with Robbie Fowler enjoying an outstanding campaign and finishing as Liverpool's leading league scorer with 28 goals.

The season was also notable for Liverpool's run to the 1996 FA Cup Final at Wembley. After progressing through the competition, the Reds faced Manchester United in the final on 11 May 1996. The match remained goalless until Eric Cantona scored in the 85th minute, giving Manchester United a 1–0 victory and leaving Liverpool as FA Cup runners-up. David James started in goal for Liverpool in the final.

In European competition, Liverpool participated in the UEFA Cup. Their campaign ended in the second round against Brøndby IF, following a 0–0 draw in Copenhagen and a 1–0 defeat at Anfield. David James wore No.1 in both legs of the tie.

Liverpool also competed in the League Cup, where their defence of the trophy they had won the previous season came to an end against Newcastle United. Across all competitions, Fowler finished as Liverpool's leading scorer with 36 goals, while players including Steve McManaman, Stan Collymore, Jamie Redknapp, John Barnes and Ian Rush formed part of a particularly recognisable mid-1990s Liverpool squad.

For the goalkeeper position, David James was Liverpool's established first choice throughout the campaign. He played in every league match during 1995–96, continuing a run in which he appeared in every Liverpool league fixture across the 1994–95, 1995–96 and 1996–97 seasons.
