Alberto Malesani's team had won both the UEFA Cup and Coppa Italia the previous season and began the new campaign by adding another trophy, defeating AC Milan 2–1 in the Supercoppa Italiana at San Siro.
The squad remained packed with international talent. Fabio Cannavaro and Lilian Thuram were central figures in defence, Dino Baggio and Diego Fuser provided experience in midfield, while Hernán Crespo remained the team's principal goalscorer. New attacking options included Brazilian forward Márcio Amoroso, Italian striker Marco Di Vaio and Argentine playmaker Ariel Ortega.
Crespo was particularly important throughout the campaign. Wearing No.9, he produced the most prolific Serie A season of his first Parma spell, scoring 22 league goals. That performance placed him among the leading scorers in Italian football and preceded his move away from Parma in the summer of 2000. His No.9 assignment for the season is independently documented in both squad and player-number records.
Parma eventually finished fifth in Serie A, narrowly missing Champions League qualification after a playoff against Inter. Although the league campaign did not produce another title, the club remained firmly among Italy's leading teams during an exceptionally competitive era of Serie A.
As defending UEFA Cup champions, Parma also returned to European competition. Their attempt to retain the trophy ultimately ended in the Round of 16 against Werder Bremen.
