Alberto Malesani inherited a squad already filled with elite talent and added further quality, most notably Juan Sebastián Verón, helping create a side capable of challenging simultaneously in Italy and Europe.
Parma finished fourth in Serie A with 55 points, earning access to the following season’s UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds. Although the league title remained out of reach, the campaign became historic through Parma’s performances in the two cup competitions.
In the Coppa Italia, Parma progressed past Genoa, Bari, Udinese and Inter before meeting Fiorentina in the two-legged final. The first match at Parma finished 1–1, with Crespo scoring for the home side. The return in Florence ended 2–2, with Crespo and Paolo Vanoli scoring for Parma. The 3–3 aggregate score gave Parma the trophy on the away-goals rule, securing the club’s second Coppa Italia.
Only one week later came an even greater triumph. Parma’s UEFA Cup campaign included victories over Fenerbahçe, Wisła Kraków, Rangers, Bordeaux and Atlético Madrid. The quarter-final against Bordeaux produced a remarkable 6–0 home victory, while Parma defeated Atlético Madrid 5–2 on aggregate in the semi-finals.
In the final at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium, Parma produced one of the defining performances of the club’s history, defeating Marseille 3–0. Hernán Crespo opened the scoring, Paolo Vanoli made it 2–0 and Enrico Chiesa completed the victory in the second half. Parma therefore finished the season holding both the UEFA Cup and Coppa Italia.
The strength of that team explains why the 1998/99 shirts remain so highly regarded.
